LOL!! (Learning one Language)

Expressing through words is an interest that blossomed a few years ago. With my father-in-law's loving and consistent encouragement, I am writing my first blog ever! So forgive me if it is too long  :D Cant withhold my excitement!   I was always a keen reader and gave importance to words and absolutely loved their magic when placed in a sentence. This can be backed up by the fun I remember having in "Use in sentences" back in school days. A natural inkling towards languages and its flow nudged me every single time to improve myself. Being a Kannadiga, born in a Marathi and Hindi speaking city, studied in an English medium school put me in front of four languages right from the start. Not to forget 3 years of Sanskrit and two years of French - basic level of course - advised by my parents in school and college. Thank god for that!! There are only so many languages that my little brain could take though. So first came Kannada, followed by Hindi and English. Unfortunately...

Panchanga - What are they? What does the lunar calendar constitute of?

During our childhood in the days where there was no TV or mobile, we used to have a evening ritual known as "Purochi". We used to all assemble around our elders, specifical our grandmother who used to make us recite all the elements of an almanac.  I am putting together the curated version as the memory has not been jogged for some time.  The Panchanga constititues of five elements that define the day and time Tithi (lunar day), Vara (day of the week), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (luni-solar day) and Karana (half lunar day). Let us look at each one of them Tithi denotes the 15 days of the waxing and waning of the moon. Waxing or the increasing moon size ends with full moon day Purnima'. These 15 days are known as Shukla Paksha. The waning or the reducing moon size ends with new moon day 'Amavasya'.  We used to recite the Thithis like below.  Padya - Ugadi Padya Bidagi - Bhava Bidagi Tadagi - Akkana Tadagi Ch...

Let us begin our explorations

|| तपसा ब्रह्म विजिज्ञासस्व ||  Learning is an individual journey of iterative enquiry. The enquiry starts with a question that intiates the exploration - seeking, experimenting, reflecting and developing an understanding. In this "google" driven era, there is no dearth of information. On the contrary there is an overload. What we need is the ability to ask the right and relevant questions.  It is indeed an individual quest as to what, why and how.  It could be driven by curiosity - wanting to know; developing skills - to be able to do;  We indeed lost a great explorer "Stephen Hawking" whose insatiable curiosity helped unravel the mysteries of universe. He was an epitome of holistic learning - 'learning to be'. Let us begin the journey - rekindle the child in us!
