Essence of Ramayana Captured
Once long ago, all the DevatAs led by Brahma and Rudradeva went to Lord Shri Lakshmi Narayana to appease and pray thus, "Oh Lord of Lords! Ravana and Kumbhakarana, the Rakshsha brothers, have become haughty and arrogant. Blessed with boons from us are distressing all the DevatAs. The saintly and good people on mother Earth are in their control and live under constant fear. O Lord! we wish and pray thee to deliver us from the hands of these Rakshashas by incarnating yourself as a human being!"
Heeding to the pleading of the DevatAs, Shri Lakshipathi assured the DevatAs smilingly that he would do as they wished. After requesting the devAtas to incarnate as vAnara sEna, a monkey army and as different beings, he disappeared fro their presence, thus relieving them of their apprehensions.
Later Shri Hari incarnated as Sri Ramachandra through the King Dasharatha and Queen Kausalyadevi. King Dasharatha had three queens - Kausalyadevi, Sumitradevi and Kaikeyidevi. At around the same time Lakshmana and Shatrughna were born to Sumitradevi and Bharata was born to Kaikeyidevi. eThese children grew under the comforts of the palatial atmosphere.
After a few years, Rishi Vishwamitra came to know through his yogic vision that Sri Hari was growing up as Sri Ramachandra at Ayodhya. He then went to Dasharatha Maharaja and requested him to send Sri Ramachandra to protect the penances and holy rituals (Yagnas) he intended to perform in the forest. Sri Rama, along with his brother Lakshmana, took their father's blessings and embarked on the journey with Sage Vishwamitra. Vishwamitra taught Sri Rama two mantras "Bala" and "Atibala" which could fulfil all wishes. The all-pervading and knowledgeable Lord Hari, in his incarnation as a human being, blessed many deserving individuals with these mantras. He, then, killed the demon Thaataki, who used to destroy the holy rituals. He, further killed many more rakshashas like Subahu after receiving several weapons like Brahma Astra and Agneya Astra, protecting the yagnas and yaagas being performed by Vishwamitra and other rishis, thereby enabling their completion without any interference.
When Sri Rama leart about the Swayamvara, choosing of the bridegroom by the bride, of the daughter of King Janaka Sitadevi, he proceeded towards Videhanagara. On the way, he released the rock-formed Ahalya from the curse of Gautamamuni. Lord Rama absolved this Sadhvi by blessing her with his gracious presence, accepted the hospitality of Sri Gautamamuni and Ahalyadevi, who were both reunited by him, before proceeding further.
At Mithilapuri, Lord Rama was welcomed by King Janaka. Janaka had kept a condition for the Swayamavara. Whoever wished to participate in the Swayamvara had to quality by pulling the strings of the famous bow of Rudra, which had been presented to Janakaraja by Indra after a lot of penance. The bow was so heavy that none could even lift it, leave alone pulling the strings. Sri Ramachandra, with the blessings of Vishwamitra, lifted the bow with great ease and under the pretext of pulling the string, broke bow in to two. Sitadevi, the Lakshmi incarnate, overjoyed seeing this feat performed the one, whom she had mentally chosen as the husband, garlanded him declaring the Swayamvara coplete. Sri Ramachandra, in the presence of King Dasharatha and his family members, who arrived from Ayodhya, married his inseparable Sitadevi with a lot of pomp and gaeity.
May such a great Sri Lakshmi Narayana bless us with happiness.
