Essence of Ramayana captured:

On hearing that King Dasharatha had decided to coronate Sri Rama as the Crown-Prince, the daasi - maid servant of Kaikeyidevi, Manthara could not tolerate it. Manthara ill-advised Kaikeyidevi to request for the two wishes, promised to her by King Dasharatha during the war between Devatas and Asuras, where they fought together, so that Bharata, Kaikeyidevi's son could become the Crown-Prince Yuvaraja. Kaikeyi, cajoled by Manthara, asked Dasharatha to grant the two wishes. One, Sri Rama should be exiled to the forest for 14 years and two, Bharata should be coronated. This resulted in the stoppage of Sri Rama's coronation.

On learning about this, Sri Rama happily accepted the coronation of Bharata and agreed to leave for the forest immediately, as he considered fulfilling his fathers wishes as his duty and also, in this way, he could complete the task of killing Ravana that he had promised the Devatas. His wife Sitadevi and brother Lakshmana decided to follow Sri Rama's footsteps. Along with his wife and brother, Sri Ramachandra, took the blessings of his parents before leaving for the forest. He requested his parents and the citizens, who, unable to bear Sri Rama's predicament had followed him, to return back to the city.

On the banks of river Ganga, Sri Rama accepted the worship of Guha, the boatman. After blessing him, Sri Rama, along with Sitadevi and Lakshmana, crossed the river on Guha's boat. Sri Rama tied his hair into a knot beautifully using the milk of the forest - Vatakshira. On the other bank of Ganga, the son of Brihasptyacharya, Sage Bharadwaja worshipped Sri Rama. From there he crossed the Yamuna river and settled in the pure, peaceful and serene mountains of Chitrakoota.

At Ayodhya, King Dasharatha, unable to bear the sorrow of separation from Sita, Rama and Lakshmana, breathed his last. Then Vasishtamuni, the royal guru, called Bharata and Shatrughna back from Kaikeyadesha, appraised them of all the events, and asked them to perform the last rites of their father.

Later, Bharata, deciding to get Sri Rama back to Ayodhya, traced Sri Rama's trail and reached Chitrakoota along with Sage Vasishta and their mothers - Kausalyadevi, Sumitradevi and Kaikeyidevi. At Chitrakoota , Bharata met Sri Rama and told him about their father's death. Greived by this news, Sri Rama gave thilanjali to the departed soul. He also consoled Bharata, who asked him to return to Ayodhya and rule the kingdom.

May the Lord Sri Rama protect us.
